A network of experts in reproductive and children’s environmental health

PEHSU Grand Rounds Webinar

This webinar is part of an ongoing series of educational presentations by experts on issues that focus on current and emerging aspects of pediatric and reproductive environmental health.

Understanding the Role of Phthalates and Phenols in Fertility, Pregnancy, and Child Health: From Research to Prevention, March 21, 2018

These presentations focus on the impact of environmental exposures to chemicals on human health at the vulnerable stages of in utero and pediatric development. A number of topics will be included – all of them relevant to questions of exposure and health effects, with consideration of risk reduction. Speakers will include physicians and PhD subject matter experts, as well as individuals with expertise in areas such as home assessment, laboratory analysis, and risk communication.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, participants should be able to:
  • Define endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and describe sources, routes, and timing of exposure.
  • Understand the toxicological and human literature on phthalates and phenols, two large chemical classes with widespread population exposure.
  • Describe how phthalates and phenols may impact reproductive, perinatal, or pediatric health.
  • Understand primary prevention strategies and methods to reduce exposure.

Research Scientist

Carmen Messerlian, PhD, MSc, is a Research Scientist at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA. She completed a PhD in Epidemiology from McGill University, a MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a BSc from McGill University. Her current research focuses on understanding the extent to which preconception and prenatal exposure to environmental chemicals affect a couple’s ability to achieve conception, maintain pregnancy, and deliver healthy offspring. As an environmental-reproductive-perinatal and pediatric epidemiologist, Dr Messerlian applies cutting-edge methods to generate evidence-based knowledge on the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on fertility, pregnancy, birth, and child health outcomes. More specifically, she investigates the effects of phthalates, phenols, and other emerging chemicals and their mixtures on ovarian reserve, pregnancy loss, birth weight, placental parameters, preterm birth, and child neurodevelopment outcomes. Dr Messerlian ultimate goal is to use this evidence to inform clinical practice and improve public health.
