<div class="eventDescription">

Applications due Nov 1, 2016

The APA has supported this retreat for trainees in Pediatric Environmental Health annually now for 15 years.  The retreat includes research in progress presentations by trainees in an informal setting with faculty input on the project and presentation.  Many past attendees have gone on to successful research careers and past speakers have included the Director of NIEHS and Administrator of EPA. Each year we include a pre-meeting workshop on Friday afternoon designed to build academic skills (this coming meeting it will be on “Writing your first NIH grant” Given by Robert Wright and Bonnie Joubert; past workshops were on how to make a prezi presentation, talking to the media and teaching skills). The workshop is followed by dinner and a keynote address. Trainee presentations take place Saturday and Sunday morning. An second keynote address is given with the Saturday dinner. The meeting adjourns by 11:00 AM on Sunday the 8th.

Who should apply?
We invite applications from pre and post doctoral trainees as well as clinical fellows. We are hoping to get an interdisciplinary mix of fellows from many different backgrounds. Click Here

About the Retreat
The retreat will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Washington DC – Crystal City, 300 Army Navy Drive, Arlington, VA. The is a 2.5 day event designed to promote academic development for trainees interested in Children’s Environmental Health.  Each year we have theme and for 2017, it is “Community Engagement in Environmental Health.” Our 2 Keynote speakers are Dr Liam O’Fallon from NIEHS and Dr Erin Haynes from the University of Cincinnati.

The retreat is small (about 30 people in total attend, about 10 faculty and ~15 trainees with sponsored travel and 4-5 guest speakers). Each fellow presents a 10 minute work in progress talk. Each Fellow talk is assigned to a faculty attendee who reviews the talk in an informal setting and then moderates discussion among the larger group. Didactic sessions related to the meeting theme are mixed in with the trainee talks.

Guest speakers on Saturday will be a panel with Drs Marc Edwards and Dr Mona Hanna-Attisha on their experience in the Flint Lead poisoning story. Dr Pat Breysse, director of NCEH at CDC will moderate a discussion of their experience.

Application Process
The application consists of a 300 word abstract of their research only, along with contact information. The top abstracts based on the training levels (we aim for a mix of early and late stage fellows), quality of the proposed research, and relevance to children’s environmental health will be selected. Invited trainees will have all travel expenses covered.

Please send all abstracts to andrea.king-vilaro@mssm.edu  Due Date is November 1.  Fellows will be notified by November 15 if awarded.

Faculty interested in attending should contact Robert Wright, robert.wright@mssm.edu. We primarily focus on support for trainee travel but if available, funds for faculty travel will be considered.
