The Southwest Center for Pediatric Environmental Health in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 6, will be providing a one-day Healthy Home workshop in Alexandria, Louisiana, for the Making a Visible Difference in Communities initiative. This training leads participants to an understanding of the connection between housing and health and how to take a holistic approach to identify and resolve problems that threaten the health and well-being of residents, especially children. The curriculum identifies root causes of health problems that are influenced by the indoor environment and focuses on the seven key elements of a healthy home: keep it dry, clean, pest-free, ventilated, safe, contaminant-free and maintained. The workshop will also focus briefly on cancer-causing agents and potential exposures in the home.
This course is designed specifically for environmental health paraprofessionals, community health workers, school health workers, housing advocates, code enforcement inspectors, other public health front-line workers, and the community who are involved in health promotion and disease prevention.

Making a Visible Difference in Communities
The Making a Visible Difference in Communities is an initiative of the EPA that focuses on providing better support to communities, especially in environmentally overburdened and economically distressed areas where the needs are the greatest. EPA is coordinating technical assistance and other resources to support communities as they pursue environmental improvements that enhance economic opportunity and quality of life.
