Hand Sanitizers in the COVID-19 Pandemic - May 5, 2021

Description

Hand hygiene is an integral part of the response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. Dr. Evelyn Mentari, Acting Deputy Director for Safety at the U.S. FDA Division of Nonprescription Drugs II (Office of Nonprescription Drugs, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research) will discuss issues associated with the increased demand for hand sanitizers during the COVID-19 pandemic. New and increasing safety concerns with hand sanitizers, including accidental ingestion by young children, contamination with methanol or 1-propanol, and ocular injuries, will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe issues related to the hand sanitizer shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Discuss new and increasing safety issues with hand sanitizers, including issues of particular concern in pediatric populations
  • Identify ways to prevent toxic hand sanitizer exposures
